Huish celebrated its Class of 2025 prize winners in a ceremony on Tuesday 14th of April.
Nominated by staff, prizes were awarded to students who went above and beyond during their time at Huish – including those who reflected the college’s values, achieved outstanding results or overcame personal challenges.
Guests were welcomed with a celebratory drink whilst current students Ryan Tinkler (Saxophonist/Vocalist) and Grace Glanfield (Keyboardist) performed live music, helping to set the celebratory scene.
Proceedings formally began with a welcome from Emma Fielding, Principal, followed by inspirational words from Dr Amber Leach; a former Kingsmead School and Huish student, she shared insights from her path to becoming a medical professional, encouraging the prize‑winning students to believe in their potential and take hold of every opportunity.
The awards were then presented by Vice Principals Becky Flower and Laurie Morgan, with each recipient invited up successively to receive their certificate (as well as any trophies for selected prizes). The evening concluded with closing remarks and thanks from Richard Hatcher, Chair of the College Governing Body.
Amongst the prizes awarded on the night were two principal’s awards: Student of the Year, awarded to Chloe Fry, and Contribution to the College Community, which was won by Dickson Yiu.
Laurie Morgan, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality, shared nomination comments for Dickson, including:
“Dickson is one of those rare individuals who committed himself wholeheartedly to every aspect of college life…he embodies commitment, service, excellence and kindness. He is an inspiration to those around him and a credit to himself, his family, and the college”.
Becky Flower, Vice Principal for Student Experience, shared glowing comments in celebration of Chloe being awarded Student of the Year, explaining how:
“Chloe sets the highest standards for herself and consistently exceeds them. Her visual impairment has been no barrier to her success as she independently seeks out solutions…the result is rapid academic progress at the very highest level, reflected in her outstanding A* grades in all her subjects.
“What sets Chloe apart is not just her academic excellence, but her passion for learning and willingness to embrace every opportunity. She has built an extraordinarily impressive college experience through enrichment activities that extend far beyond the classroom. Chloe represents the very best of our college community”.
This year’s prizegiving event provided the opportunity for alumni to catch up, as well as share insights into their post-college progression journeys with their former teachers. Representatives for sponsored prizes helped celebrate the winners’ success, as well as share advice from their prospective industries.
Huish would like to thank everyone who attended the evening and the individuals and organisations who continue to sponsor and support these awards: Amicus Law, Bill Revans, Helen Twyble, Mr & Mrs Belluomo, Peter Avery, Robert Spooner, Rosie Austin, Somerset Care, Taunton Chamber of Commerce and Wellington Motors.
