Taunton School has partnered with the University of BathΒ on a new research projectΒ aiming to raise the standard of literacy across the world.
The British Academic Written English Secondary School (BAWESS) corpus projectΒ has been designed toΒ investigate the role of languageΒ inΒ representingΒ knowledge in different disciplinesΒ by collecting one million words writtenΒ by studentsΒ acrossΒ IGCSE/GCSE, A-Level and International BaccalaureateΒ qualifications.
TauntonΒ SchoolΒ has beenΒ selectedΒ as a partner school toΒ submitΒ its studentsβ work,Β which willΒ count towardsΒ the one-million-word goalΒ forming the basis ofΒ the research, and to contribute to and benefit from the resulting research.
Taunton SchoolΒ is also proud to announce itsΒ involvement inΒ theΒ LanguageΒ andΒ LiteracyΒ Education Network (LLEN). TheΒ SchoolΒ isΒ chairing the Europe and Middle East Secondary School working group,Β whichΒ aims toΒ bridgeΒ the gap betweenΒ cutting-edgeΒ academic research from around the world andΒ teaching and learning in secondary school classrooms.

The LLENΒ is an international networkΒ thatΒ bringsΒ together scholars from across the globeΒ toΒ applyΒ a range of methodological approaches andΒ perspectivesΒ to explore educational challenges.
In timesΒ in whichΒ levels ofΒ literacyΒ areΒ increasinglyΒ a concern, Taunton School is proud toΒ beΒ workingΒ towards improvingΒ theΒ standardΒ of literacyΒ for students in the UK and worldwide. BothΒ programmes will help produce strategiesΒ forΒ teaching andΒ learningΒ thatΒ are evidence informed.
Taunton Schoolβs academic provisionΒ offers a pathway for everyone, including GCSEs,Β IGCSEs, and one-year and two-year GCSEs in a vast range of subjects, as well as A-Levels, BTECs,Β theΒ International Baccalaureate and the International Foundation Year in Sixth Form. It has recently introduced an Academic Colours initiativeΒ to recognise studentsΒ who areΒ excelling academically, joiningΒ its existing Sports Colours and Performing Arts ColoursΒ offering.
