Sherborne Girls Head’s 125km Challenge Inspires School and Raises Vital Funds for Bursaries

Posted: 26th June 2025

What began as a solo endurance challenge by the Head of Sherborne Girls became an inspiring story of resilience, unity and school spirit. On Friday 20 June, Dr Ruth Sullivan laced up her running shoes and set off on a bold mission to run 125km in 24 hours, to mark the school’s 125th anniversary and raise funds for its Candlelight Bursaries. These bursaries provide 100% financial support to girls who face significant social or economic barriers, unlocking access to the outstanding education and pastoral care offered at Sherborne Girls.

Ruth’s route was timed to finish at the school’s annual Sports Day, in front of pupils, staff, families and alumnae. However, by early afternoon on Saturday 21 June, and having completed a staggering 85km, Dr Sullivan was advised by medical professionals that it would be unsafe for her to continue running given the extremely hot weather conditions.

Yet, the challenge didn’t end there. In a moment of spontaneous leadership and solidarity, Sixth Form pupil Ealish Platt-Ransom (L6) stepped forward, gathering a group of pupils to ensure the distance was completed.

“After hearing that Dr Sullivan had to stop her run after an incredible 85km, I thought we needed to do something to show her how proud we were as a school and how much we all supported her after this extraordinary achievement. I thought what better way than to have pupils finish off the remaining 40km on her behalf during Sports Day which would be a brilliant finish to the 125km challenge for the Candlelight Bursaries and the end of Sports Day,” said Ealish.

Their gesture turned into a heartwarming highlight of the day. In the final leg, Dr Sullivan joined the girls on the track, and they crossed the finish line to a chorus of cheers from the school community. It was a powerful symbol of resilience, unity and hope.

Ali Henderson, CEO of the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, one of the partners supporting Candlelight Bursaries, commented:

“We are so inspired by Ruth’s epic challenge. Thank you to her and the whole Sherborne Girls community for their support. Through our partners, seven girls so far have thrived in the purposeful and embracing community of Sherborne Girls. We hope Ruth’s efforts will inspire more to give towards the Candlelight Bursaries Campaign.”

The girls response to adversity was not only a beautiful tribute to Dr Sullivan’s determination, but a reflection of the values that define the Sherborne Girls community; resilient, kind, and always stronger together.
