Keswick School Boarders take to the fells

Posted: 16th October 2023

Keswick School is situated in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. Keswick is also a World Heritage UNSECO site and with this in mind, this year’s weekend activities have been planned to incorporate where we live, and make the most of the ‘Great Outdoors’.

There are 214 Wainwright fells to climb and the boarders have chosen to climb 6 of these throughout the year, and will choose another 6 next year and so on.  There was great excitement last weekend when our mountain guide arrived to ensure the boarders were correctly equipped for their adventure.  With the all-important packed lunches safely stored in rucksacks, they set off on their first climb of the year, ‘Walla Crag’.

The view from the top of this mountain is breath-taking, you can see both Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake.  On the way up the boarders had to pass a farm where one of our house parents live, and she educated the boarders on the fell ponies that they keep, and the mountain guide is also a geography teacher so there were many discussions that included rock formations.

Weekend activities at Keswick School are compulsory for Year 7-9 and older boarders are able to join in if they wish.  Getting outside is proven to be a positive factor in having good mental health which tied in nicely with international mental health day last Tuesday.
