Students from ACS International School Cobham recently attended the House of Lords for an inspiring engineering event hosted by All-Party Parliamentary Engineering Group (APPEG).

High school STEM students Anton, Edward and Sean, were invited to the event due to their commitment to excellence in their fields of study. The event aimed to inspire young people to pursue a career in engineering and promote best practices within the industry. Members of Parliament and the House of Lords who share an interest in fostering opportunities for students to pursue engineering were in attendance.

The event, which was hosted by Professor The Lord Mair CBE, involved distinguished speakers from organisations including offshore wind engineering consultancy, Wood Thilsted and renewable energy company, Orsetd. The discussions focused on sustainability in industries ranging from offshore wind power, to nuclear energy and aerospace engineering.

Grade 10 student Anton said: “The trip to the House of Lords was an unforgettable experience. The grandeur of the House of Lords was awe-inspiring. I had the pleasure of conversing with an aerospace engineer and an Imperial College graduate, which has influenced my career considerations. The discussion on offshore wind opened my eyes to the extent of innovative initiatives in this field. Overall, it was an incredible opportunity that will stay with me forever.”

Dr Karolina Hammer, IB and Integrated Mathematics Teacher and High School STEM Coordinator at ACS Cobham, said: “Our students proved to be exceptional ambassadors for ACS International Schools. They returned inspired with an abundance of ideas, creativity, and a strong drive to make a positive impact on the world through sustainability.”
