The education offered by Felsted School in north Essex has been recognised by the renowned publication, Tatler, and rewarded with inclusion in the new edition of its much-anticipated Schools Guide, published in September 2022.
Felsted, an independent boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18 set on a 90-acre rural campus, was chosen to headline the East Anglia and Midlands section of the Tatler Schools Guide 2023. The school is described in its entry as an ‘un-snobbish, forward-thinking place that welcomes different perspectives and is committed to embracing even more’. Its global outlook and philanthropic work were also singled out for praise.
‘We are delighted that the all-round education we offer at Felsted, which inspires academic excellence as well as a focusing on developing individuals’ own particular skills and attributes through a strong co-curricular programme and supportive environment, has come to the attention of the editors at Tatler,’ said Felsted Head Chris Townsend.
‘It is an honour to be included alongside some of the most famous schools in the world and to be able to share the essence of modern Felsted and our four and a half centuries of history with a wide readership.’
Felsted School was founded in 1564 by Richard Lord Riche, Lord Chancellor to King Edward VI, and the school is set in north Essex countryside, 20 minutes from Stansted airport and an hour from both London and Cambridge. It was one of the 12 founder members of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and is a lead member of the Round Square Conference of world schools.
Main entry points to the school are at the ages of 4, 7, 11, 13 and 16 and scholarships and bursaries are available. Around 80 per cent of Felsted students aged 13 to 18 board, and a fifth of those are from families not based in the UK. In 2022, 60% of GCSE students achieved 9-7, while at A level 72% achieved A*-B and the average International Baccalaureate score was 36. The vast majority of leavers secured places at their first-choice university or on highly competitive degree apprenticeship programmes.
The school is well known for its success in the arts and sports, and former students include England rugby international Max Malins, cricketer Derek Pringle, Olympic trap shooting bronze medallist Matthew Coward-Holley, as well as virologist and broadcaster Dr Chris Smith (‘The Naked Scientist’), former chief of the defence staff General Lord Dannatt, and four of the sons of Oliver Cromwell.
