Taunton School opens new Sixth Form Centre

Posted: 4th October 2022

Students at Taunton School are settling in to a new Sixth Form Centre which opened this term as part of a Β£750k autumn investment in facilities.

The centre, known as β€˜The Guvvy’, is based in the school’s 19th century building and features study pods, social areas and unisex toilets.

Head student Charlie Franks, 18, said: β€œI feel that the space is appreciated by students, as we had a hand in creating the design of the space, making the time spent in there fulfilling and enjoyable as it reflects what we wanted in it.

β€œThe new space is amazing. It provides a relaxed area where friends can come and socialise with one another, alongside a collaborative working space in which sixth form students can complete work.”

Terry Harris, Head of Estates at Taunton School, said: β€œWe’re delighted that the students are settling in well to their new environment.

β€œThe new centre adds a contemporary feel to our beautiful 19th century building, retaining period features such as stained glass windows while offering a bright, airy and modern designated space for our Sixth Formers.”

The Guvvy is named after a member of Taunton School staff known as β€˜The Governor’, who ran the tuck shop in the 1880s.

Taunton School’s new library is due to open in October and work is currently in progress to create a β€˜green heart’ in the centre of the school, scheduled for completion in December. The school also plans to transform sports facilities over the next two years and open a brand new
international school in 2026.
