Ashville College’s old pupil association has elected Beth Hartwell as its one hundred and fourth President.
Beth, who takes over the reins from Ian Brown, attended the independent school between 1998 and 2009, and becomes the Ashvillian Society’s fourth woman to hold the title.
The Old Ashvillian Society was founded in 1890 by Frederick Lincoln Armitage to ‘bring together friends who might otherwise never meet, to assist one generation of pupils in becoming acquainted with another and to further the interests of the College’. Notable past Presidents include Stuart Mallinson DSO MC, Sir Arthur Balfour, and Sir William Grimshaw.
Beth studied Biology at Newcastle University and graduated with a First-Class Honour’s Degree. She completed a PGCE at York St John University and is the Assistant Headteacher at a York secondary school.
She said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be elected as President of the Ashvillian Society and I’m really looking forward to my next two years in the role. I’d like to thank the members of committee for showing their faith in me.
“Ian has been an exemplary President, and the Society owes him a huge debt of gratitude for all he’s done over the last three years.
“After the challenges of Covid, we are looking to reinvigorate our calendar of events, starting with a lunch in December to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ashville becoming co-educational.”
Ian said: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to have been President of the Ashvillian Society, and I’m delighted to have passed the baton to a very worthy successor.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to play my part within the Society and supporting Beth as the Immediate Past President.”
