Gordon’s Footballers in Cup Final

Posted: 6th May 2022

Gordon’s School is facing one of its most significant challenges in its 137 year history when footballers travel to Stoke City FC Stadium on Tuesday 10th May for the final of the English Schools’ U16 Football Association Cup against Brooke House College.

The school in West End, Woking has won through six rounds of this national competition since beating Wetherby Senior School 7-0 in October.

Their run has produced a number of nail-biting victories, in the Small Schools Competition that has attracted schools from all over the country with a strong footballing pedigree including Lancing College, Repton and Rossall School.

Their opponents Brooke House College in Leicestershire have enjoyed a successful season with six wins, a draw and one loss! However the Gordon’s U16 side has won every game played! And the school is hoping that their shooter Will Francis will continue his goal scoring run.

Gordon’s last reached the final of the competition in 2016. But since then players have enjoyed enhanced facilities at the school including a new 3-G pitch to complement the floodlit astros and a brand new sports hall enabling futsal to be played. Two students are currently set to study in America on football scholarships. But the School’s trump card is their coach, former Chelsea and Sunderland player Gareth Hall, who also attained 15 international caps for Wales.

Head of Football, Paul King, a former Ipswich Town player said: “This year has seen a great cup run including fixtures against some excellent footballing schools in the South. The boys have trained and played exceptionally well to get to the final at Stoke City and I know parents and players are looking forward to a memorable day.”
