Truro School Recognised for offering Award-Winning Sixth Form Provision

Truro School has been recognised at the Muddy Stiletto’s Best Schools Awards 2022.

Truro School Sixth Form was Highly Commended in the ‘Special Sixth Form’ category. This national award recognises the work that has gone on to create a truly unique offering for Sixth Formers at Truro School.

Head and Deputy Head of Sixth Form at Truro School, Mr Ross Williamson and Mrs Lucy Jupp, explain what sets Truro School apart from other A-Level providers.

“Truro School offers Sixth Formers the best of both worlds – being treated in many ways like an adult, whilst also having the support network surrounding a school student. Sixth Formers really are in the driving seat, but we are there to help them navigate and avoid the pitfalls. We give them a steer when they need it.

What makes our Sixth Form special is a mood and an attitude, not just a list of things to check off on paper; we give them a whole platform of opportunities”, explains Mr Williamson.

Mrs Jupp continues, “We are supported on so many sides by our Heads of Departments, our fantastic tutor teams and staff, the medical centre, the Rev and the pastoral team.

The wide array of curricular and supra curricular activities we offer allows them to be experts if they wish or generalists if they would rather.

We also know that not everyone is suited to university and that it is very much their future. They need to make their decisions.”

The jewel in this crown is the new Truro School Sixth Form Diploma, which was introduced last year. It is an ever-evolving framework created to promote individual choice and ambition, alongside a well-resourced breadth of opportunities, to explore diverse interests and develop real employment and life skills.

Mr Williamson tell us, “Getting into the university of your choice, being offered the right job, or being accepted for an interview isn’t just about great A-Level results. It is about a Sixth Form journey that leads to references that evidence relevant, wide, and meaningful experiences and knowledge. Truro School’s Diploma programme achieves exactly this.”

In addition to our Sixth Form Diploma, the School offers a range of expertly advised pathways including to Oxbridge application, international university application, and medical and legal futures.

Mr Williamson continues, “Our co-educational Sixth Form is special in that it is large enough to have a diverse pupil group in terms of interests, skills, ambitions, backgrounds and beliefs, but small enough for it to feel like a cohesive community. Our students mix and collaborate widely through co-curricular activities which help foster positive peer relationships. The students embrace their freedoms to move in many different circles.

Each year we are proud to welcome large numbers of new students from local, national, and international schools into our Sixth Form. They are attracted to Truro School by the Diploma, the culture, and all the opportunities, including Truro School fencing, the Leith’s Cookery School, our football partnership with Saints South West, or our Cricket relationship with the Rajasthan Royals, to name a few. New Sixth Formers have a real impact and help the Sixth Form to feel like a fresh and empowering start for all, including those who have been with us since Prep.

There is also a unique leadership programme and ethos throughout the School, including both conventional School leadership roles and also training to be peer counsellors in an age of ever increased awareness of wellbeing. This too is a vital part of our offering. Students have a voice and are coached to be leaders of the School and potentially for the future.”

Head of Truro School, Andy Johnson says of the award: “We are delighted to have our ever more dynamic and empowering Sixth Form recognised by this national award. It is a credit to the values and ambition showed by the students who are the heart of our School, and the dedicated and creative staff who inspire and serve them through the Diploma programme and beyond. It is a privilege to lead a School that empowers talented and courageous young adults to be and to become the very best of themselves.”
