King’s Bruton welcomed young performers from across Somerset and Dorset today for an immersive Performing Arts Workshop delivered in partnership with British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT). Pupils in Years 7 to 11 from schools across the region came together for a full day of creative workshops led by professional theatre practitioners from BYMT, exploring acting and devising, singing, sound and composition, and dance and movement.
British Youth Music Theatre is a national performing arts education charity which works with young people from across the UK, providing opportunities to develop skills and confidence through the collaborative process of creating and performing new music theatre. Throughout the day, pupils were encouraged to experiment, collaborate and develop their ideas, experiencing first-hand the creative process behind making original music theatre.
Ashley Marshfield, Director of Music at King’s Bruton, said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome so many talented and enthusiastic young people to King’s. I was hugely impressed by the energy, confidence and creativity they brought to the workshops, particularly their willingness to try new things and work together with pupils they had only just met. Our enormous thanks go to the brilliant team from British Youth Music Theatre, whose expertise, warmth and enthusiasm created such an inspiring environment for everyone involved. It has been a fantastic opportunity for young people from across our region to come together and experience the excitement of creating something collaboratively.”

They threw themselves into every challenge and it was wonderful to see their ideas develop through acting, movement and music. Days like this give young people the freedom to be ambitious creatively, build confidence and discover just how much can be achieved when different disciplines and ideas come together.”
The workshop forms part of King’s Bruton’s commitment to providing opportunities for young people both within the School and across the wider community to engage with high-quality music, drama and performance.
