New research reveals importance of international families boarding schools

Posted: 15th October 2026

Boarding schools are welcoming fewer international families than a year ago, and each one is now more valuable to the school than ever, according to new research.

The Overseas Intake, commissioned by esenda, the UK-based fintech company that aims to help schools manage payments, examines what the 2026 Independent Schools Council (ISC) Census reveals about international boarding.

The census shows 22,941 pupils at ISC schools with parents living overseas, down 10.1% in a single year, around three times faster than the 3.5% fall across ISC schools as a whole.

It also revealed that families from mainland China and Hong Kong accounted for around 40% of overseas-parent pupils, with 93% of these pupils boarding, each family representing a significant and recurring source of income.

The paper argues that this shifts how schools should think about international fee payments. When every family is harder to win and more costly to replace, a failed payment, an unexpected shortfall or a confusing payment process becomes a retention issue, not just an administrative one.

The paper sets out the data, what it means for boarding schools, and practical considerations for making international fee collection simple for families and predictable for finance teams.
