A Sixth Form pupil from Blundell’s School in Tiverton has been selected as one of only five students in the UK to represent the country at the International Physics Olympiad in Colombia this summer.
Ed, 18, secured his place on Team UK after progressing through two rounds of the prestigious British Physics Olympiad and being invited to the final selection camp at the University of Oxford, where just fifteen students from across the country competed for a place.
Following five days of advanced university-level teaching and demanding practical and theoretical assessments, Ed was chosen for the national team and will travel to Bucaramanga, Colombia in July to compete against the world’s leading young physicists.
It is particularly significant to see a pupil from the South West represented among those selected for the UK Physics team, and, remarkably, it marks Blundell’s second international science Olympiad success in six years.
Mr Douglas Morrison, Head of Physics at Blundell’s, said To see Ed selected as one of just five students to represent the UK at the International Physics Olympiad is a moment of enormous pride for us all. His perseverance through years of gruelling competition is a testament to his exceptional talent and character.” Dr Jonathan Ratcliffe, Deputy Head, Academic said: “This is a remarkable achievement and richly deserved recognition of Ed’s talent, dedication and intellectual curiosity. To be selected among the top five young physicists in the country is extraordinary, and we are immensely proud of him.”
The International Physics Olympiad is one of the world’s most prestigious academic competitions, bringing together the finest young physicists from around the globe.
Remarkably, Ed follows in the footsteps of his older brother Harry, who represented the UK at the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2021, making this a rare family double and a powerful reflection of the scientific scholarship and ambition nurtured at Blundell’s.
Dr Ratcliffe added: “Achievements such as this speak not only to individual brilliance, but to a culture of scholarship where pupils are encouraged to think ambitiously, pursue intellectual challenge and engage deeply with their subjects.”
Ed will travel to Colombia in early July to represent the UK on the international stage.
