Students from across all year groups take part in hands-on scientific exploration, showcasing Adcote’s strong academic tradition and growing STEM success.
Adcote School for Girls has celebrated a highly engaging and intellectually rich British Science Week (6–15 March 2026), with students from Junior to Sixth Form immersing themselves in scientific discovery across genomics, engineering, environmental science, physics, and chemistry.
Reflecting the school’s strong academic ethos and increasing uptake in STEM subjects, the week brought together curiosity, creativity, and real-world problem-solving through a series of interactive challenges and investigations.
Sixth Form: Exploring the Frontiers of Genetics and Perception
Year 13 biologists took on the complexity of the Human Genome Project, exploring topics including pharmacogenetics, synthetic biology, and evolutionary mapping. Their learning culminated in a poster presentation challenge, with Elinor awarded first place for her clear and confident explanation of advanced genomic research.
Meanwhile, Year 12 chemists investigated colour perception and optical illusions, deepening their understanding of how the brain interprets visual information and challenging assumptions about what we see.
Lower School: Engineering, Environment, and Experimentation
Year 7 students explored buoyancy and engineering principles, designing boats capable of holding the highest number of marbles. A standout design from Jennifer G. held an impressive 190 marbles, with strong competition from Jessie and Jemima.
Year 8 focused on environmental science, researching the impact of plastics before creating their own biodegradable bioplastics, producing items such as pots and coasters.
Year 9 and 10 students tackled imaginative STEM-based “What If?” scenarios, ranging from water scarcity solutions to teleportation and human adaptation to extreme environments. Engineering challenges, including the “Egg Lander” and paper tower competitions, tested resilience, creativity, and design thinking.
Junior School: Curiosity in Action
Younger students embraced science with enthusiasm. Year 6 took part in a Science Hunt, following clues around the school and reflecting on key scientific questions along the way.
Year 5 completed the CREST Award Challenge, “Fantastic Fingerprints”, learning about fingerprint variation and the history of forensic science. Pupils also enjoyed a live interactive science lesson, bringing experiments to life in real time.
A Celebration of STEM Excellence
Across all year groups, British Science Week at Adcote School highlighted the school’s commitment to academic excellence and its growing strength in STEM education. The week provided pupils with opportunities to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply scientific principles to real-world challenges.
Head of Science, Mrs Walford, at Adcote School said: “British Science Week is always a highlight of the academic calendar. It is inspiring to see students across all ages engage so enthusiastically with science, demonstrating both intellectual curiosity and impressive problem-solving skills.”
The week concluded with a shared sense of achievement and excitement, reinforcing Adcote’s position as a school where scientific curiosity is actively encouraged and celebrated.
