Richard Cairns “delighted” to be named on the globally recognised list that celebrates those who have made a positive impact on society.
The Top 100 Most Influential People 2026 awards shine a spotlight on the most dynamic, persuasive and powerful leaders from all sectors who are at the top of their game, chosen by an independent panel of judges.
The award has been won by Principal of the Brighton College family of schools, Richard Cairns, who has long been recognised for his pioneering approach, inspirational leadership, and tireless commitment to transforming the educational experience for young people.
This latest accolade further cements Cairns’ position as the most influential and visionary figure in modern education. Already celebrated as the only head teacher in the UK to have been named Tatler Head of the Year twice, under his leadership Brighton College has achieved a string of remarkable national honours – most notably being named The Sunday Times UK School of the Decade, reinforcing its reputation for academic excellence, innovation, and most importantly, kindness.
The rise of Brighton College has been remarkable. When Cairns became Head Master in 2006, Brighton ranked 147th in The Sunday Times’ school league table. It has climbed every year since, and last year outperformed every other co-educational and boarding school nationwide. These results have translated into outstanding university destinations, with the University of Cambridge remaining the single most common destination.
Today, Brighton College stands as one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking educational groups in the world, with its award-winning family of schools flourishing both in the UK and internationally. There are now Brighton College schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Bangkok, Bangkok Vibhavadi, Dubai, Handcross, Hanoi, Hove, Kensington and Singapore. There are three more schools set to open in Rome, Madrid and Lisbon in 2027, and more announcements are in the pipeline. This success reflects Cairns’ strategic vision and his unwavering belief in the importance of kindness, curiosity, confidence and ambition in shaping the next generation.
Reflecting on the award, Richard Cairns said: “I am absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to receive this recognition. But, as ever, any award like this is really about the brilliant people around me. I am fortunate to work with an extraordinary team of teachers and every day I am inspired by our remarkable pupils across the Brighton College family. This award belongs to them as much as to me.”
