Senior School pupils compete in the historic Barnard Run

CROSS country runners tested their mettle as they braved chilly conditions to complete an historic run.

Hundreds of competitors, aged four to 18, tackled temperatures just above freezing, made chillier by a noticeable wind, as they competed in the historic 134th Barnard Run.

In the run up to the big race the whole school took part in ‘Barney Bash’ events with the fastest times qualifying for the big race. These sponsored races raised hundreds of pounds for the Worldwide Barefoot Project, a charity which breathes life into old sports kit to help children across Africa, the Pacific and Caribbean regions.

Over the years the Barney Run has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a variety of charities as runners tackle age-appropriate courses from three quarters of a mile for Pre-Prep school children to four miles for seniors.

Pre-Prep School children got proceedings under way with a run around the grounds coming home to joyous cheers from students, staff and parents.

Years 3-6 pupils completed a longer route around the back fields before winners topped the podium to collect their medals.

The intermediate and senior boys and girls course took them off site and along the banks of the River Tees.

Headmaster David Cresswell said: “As one of Barnard Castle School’s most cherished traditions the run captures so much of what we value as a community – determination, camaraderie and a healthy dose of grit.

“It’s the kind of experience that etches itself in the memory. Runners embrace every moment including the challenge, the fun and the sense of achievement that comes from completing the Barney Run. It is a fantastic race that creates memories that last a lifetime.”
