Taunton School above ground with new boarding house build

Posted: 28th October 2025

The construction of Taunton School’s new boarding facility has now progressed above ground level.

The project, on track to be completed in 2027, will provide more than 140 new beds for boarders at the School and will enable international boarders to live and study with British students as part of the ‘One School, Many Pathways’ campaign.

Recently, builders have completed the foundations, poured the structural concrete ground floor, and completed the substructure masonry. Now that the substructures are complete, the structural framing system is being built which will allow the external and internal loadbearing walls to be constructed.

An electric tower crane was brought on site over the summer to assist with several aspects of the build and will remain in place until next year. The weathervane is activated which will allow the crane to rotate in windy conditions to reduce pressure on the crane structure.

Julia Humphries, Director of Estates at Taunton School, said: “We are delighted with the progress of our brand-new boarding facility, which began construction earlier this year and is now really taking shape above ground.

“This ambitious project forms part of Taunton School’s development plan to integrate all of our boarders on one site which will greatly enhance our overall boarding experience.”

Headmaster James Johnson has collaborated with the Estates and consultant teams to select interior features that align with the School’s style and support student needs. Plans are in place for students interested in architecture and construction to visit the site soon.

Taunton School has remained in regular contact with its residential neighbours to ensure they are continuously updated on the project’s progress.

Other areas of Taunton School’s 56-acre campus have been updated recently too, with an athletic development gym opening at the start of term, as well as several refurbished classrooms, a new DT lab, and additional CNED classrooms.
