A New Chapter Begins at Aysgarth as Girls Join the School for the First Time in History

Last Thursday marked a historic moment for Aysgarth Prep School as 34 girls joined the student body, the first in the school’s nearly 150-year history. This new chapter brings co-education to Years 4–8, following over 30 years of co-education in the Pre-Prep school. The decision reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to offering opportunities to both boys and girls while maintaining the provision of academic excellence, providing opportunities and preparing its pupils for senior schools all over the UK.

As the new term begins, there is a palpable sense of excitement among staff, who are eager to teach, support, and guide all students—both boys and girls—through this significant moment in the school’s history. Aysgarth Prep School welcomed 34 new girls for the first time in its long and distinguished history, taking the prep school total to 152. For nearly 150 years, Aysgarth has been a beacon of academic excellence, equipping young people for success in the UK’s top senior schools and life beyond. This transformative step into co-education continues to build on the school’s reputation for providing exceptional educational opportunities. Aysgarth Prep, renowned for its nearly 150-year tradition of excellence for boys, is now embracing co-education in Years 4–8, following 30 successful years of co-education in the Pre-Prep school (Nursery to Year 3). With a 50:50 male-to-female staff ratio, and a 1:5 staff-to-pupil ratio Aysgarth stands out in the independent sector.

Headmaster Jonathan Anderson remarked: “While this is a change, the essence of what makes Aysgarth special remains the same – academic excellence, strong community, rich traditions, and boundless opportunities. Some girls have already joined the Chapel choir, all are proudly wearing their uniforms, and they’re fully embracing everything the school has to offer.”
