On Sunday 12 November pupils, parents and staff filled the chapel at Hanford for the annual Remembrance Service. The chapel was decorated with a stunning display of poppies and foliage from the school gardens, however it was the singing that took centre stage. The girls’ choir and folk group led the music with a poignant anthem, ‘And Everyone Beneath The Vine and Fig Tree’ and ended the service with an arrangement of ‘We’ll Meet Again’, to which the congregation were encouraged to join in for the last verse, and ‘Abide With Me‘. There was hardly a dry eye in the chapel.
Mrs Phillips, Head of Hanford, gave the address, speaking about the importance of remembrance and remembering and asking the girls thoughtful questions about what remembrance meant to them.
It was a poignant and beautiful service; Hanford’s chapel is very much at the heart of school life and, as ever, the girls rose to the occasion and performed with poise and confidence, not only singing but leading with readings and prayers. As always, it was lovely to see so many parents at such an important event.
In the lead up to Remembrance Sunday younger pupils in Years 3 and 4 took part in a Remembrance colouring competition with the most colourful and joyful pictures winning a prize. In addition, girls in Year 4 made their own beautiful, felted poppies in Handwork lessons (aka textiles!) which they presented to Hanford Governors later in the week when they visited the school.
