A Millfield tennis player has gained a place at pioneering Cambridge Maths School.
The Cambridge Mathematics School, which just opened in September 2023 was developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge, is a specialist Sixth Form. It is for 16-19 year old students with exceptional aptitude and passion for maths. The Sixth Form aims to prepare students for success in math disciplines at top universities with a focus on pioneering learning and increasing diversity. All students will study A Level Maths and Further Maths and will choose one or two subjects from Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or Computer Science.
Flynn Godfrey, from Essex, joined Millfield in Year 10. He said, “I was both proud and relieved about finding out I had a place at the Cambridge Maths School. I didn’t expect to get in.”
Flynn achieved six 9s, one 8, one 7, and a B in Additional Maths in his GCSEs despite joining in the middle of the school year in Year 10. Flynn is a tennis player and represented the school in the National Tennis Finals this year, which was the first Millfield tennis team in 10 years to win a National School title. The team also won the “Team of the Year” at the Millfield Brilliance Dinner this year. He said, “It was quite a journey, arriving mid-year, settling into an established house with no existing friends, and I had missed out on quite a lot of the GCSE syllabus, but it was all worth it for the experience.”
He was able to balance his sports and schoolwork while also preparing for exams during his time at Millfield. He said, “As the exams approached, I spoke to key people about what I wanted to achieve, and they helped me to plan and focus, especially my housemaster and the older tennis players. The school arranged extra help in the subject where I most needed the grade for Cambridge. All this meant that I could still enjoy my tennis, even throughout the exam period. Millfield helps you develop academically and still gives you time to play your sport; you don’t have to compromise either too much.”
His houseparent, Tristan Kingsford said, “Flynn worked exceptionally hard and was a real catalyst for the others in his year group, to forge an alliance with each other to achieve their best at GCSE. He would often be found supporting his peers and encouraging them during the long period of revision and exams.”
Flynn’s parents, Loraine and Richard said, “The Millfield experience has helped Flynn to grow as a person. Millfield will always be an important and unforgettable stepping stone for Flynn.”
