Pupils and teachers at St George’s School, an independent day and boarding school for girls in Edinburgh, are enjoying another successful year as SQA examination results are released.
A significant number of girls have chosen to pursue careers in the tech field, which has typically been a male dominated industry, with several students from St George’s applying to study computing at university. Given the excitement surrounding 2024 as the ‘Year of Elections’ around the world, it is also not surprising to see a high number of students taking up Politics and International Relations-oriented courses, ranging from Interdisciplinary Futures at Edinburgh University to PPE at Durham University. Last year, 99% of the students achieved their first-choice destination.
Highlight of the SQA examination results include:
- Lower sixth students: 30% achieved an impressive five or more straight A grades at Higher level, with 84% of all highers achieved across the school being grade A or B and 67% of those at A grade.
- Advanced Higher: demonstrated excellence with 75% of grades at A or B grade
There have been excellent performances across the entire curriculum, which reflects the importance placed on encouraging each student to find the path that best suits and inspires them.
Bivy, a student at St George’s, commented on the results:
“I’m very happy to have achieved three A grades in my Advanced Highers in Biology, Maths and Chemistry.
Arriving from Hong Kong, it was a smooth transition to St George’s – I felt welcomed and supported, which further reassured me that this was the ideal environment for my academic and personal growth. I chose St George’s for Sixth Form because it’s an amazing girls-only school with a stellar reputation for excellent exam results and subjects offered. The cultural diversity was particularly appealing.
I have decided to stay in Edinburgh to study Veterinary Medicine. Since childhood, I’ve held deep compassion for animals and always wanted to become a vet. Our career teacher kindly organised three weeks’ work experience in vet clinics. Observing interactions between owners and vets
helped me understand the sacred mission of vets in promoting better animal wellbeing.”
Carol Chandler-Thompson, Head at St George’s School, said:
“We are exceptionally proud of every single one of our students, not only for a fantastic set of results, but of how they contributed generously to community life throughout their time at school and the integrity and commitment they have demonstrated as individuals. As Edinburgh’s only all-through school for girls, we can create an atmosphere in which girls can really find their own voice, develop leadership skills in every subject area and learn from inspiring female role models.
I have no doubt that this year’s leavers are ready to go out and make an incredibly positive impact on the world and we cannot wait to see what is next for them.
At St George’s, we believe that every girl can achieve and excel, given the right opportunities. From Nursery to Sixth Form, our broad and balanced curriculum helps each girl find the path that is right for her, supported by strong female role models and a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. ”
St George’s provides a coherent all-through academic curriculum, maximising the opportunity for building skills. This broad and balanced curriculum incorporates language, mathematical, scientific, technological, physical, social, religious and moral, and expressive education. It is based upon a “Best of British” model with the Curriculum for Excellence, GCSE and SQA qualifications as the basis of flexible individual pathways.
