Felsted School Sixth Former, Toby C, has been awarded Felsted’s prestigious Hunter Scholarship.

The Hunter Scholarship is named in honour of Old Felstedian Professor Tony Hunter, to recognise his outstanding achievements in the field of scientific research. Currently Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and Director at the Salk Institute Cancer Centre in California, Dr Hunter is one of the foremost recognised leaders in how cell growth and division are regulated, and how mutations in genes that control growth lead to cancer.

Toby, who was one of Felsted’s top GCSE achievers in 2021, already holds a Wallis Scholarship at the school, for recognition of excellence in Mathematics.

“I’m deeply grateful to have been awarded both the Wallis and Hunter scholarships in recognition of my passion for maths and science,” comments Toby. “The names themselves are a great motivation and inspiration to continue to work hard extending myself and to be stretched by Felsted and my teachers, who have helped me get to this point. I hope to continue to strive in these subjects and I hope to be able to carry this curiosity beyond school as well.”

The Wallis Scholarship is named in recognition of John Wallis, who attended Felsted back in the 17th century (1616–1703), marking his 400th Anniversary in 2016. Fellow of the Royal Society, Mathematician and Divine and Savilian Professor of Geometry, Oxford University, Wallis is most famous for introducing the symbol for infinity.

These scholarships are awarded to pupils showing exceptional talent in Mathematics and Science and whose aspiration is to study these subjects at the highest level at University and beyond. Candidates are expected to be academically able and inquisitive and should, when they leave, be capable of gaining admission to a top university.

An Academic Scholar and a member of the Schools’ academic Roberts Society, Toby enjoys coding and was proud to gain a Distinction in the Perse Coding Team Challenge. He balances his studies playing Rugby 7s and as a member of the Drama Technical team.

Toby states: “I have always tried to find out how things work and what things are made of, resulting in a lot of independent and self-motivated study to satisfy this curiosity and why I am aiming to study physics or natural sciences at university level in the hopes of becoming a physicist in the field of high-energy physics. I’m proud of what I have achieved so far and look forward to learning more going forward.”
