Four sixth form students from Roedean School travelled to Italy to join an international conference where young people discussed some of the world’s maritime challenges.

The quartet from the Brighton boarding school represented the UK at the Next Gen 27 Conference in Naples last month, meeting delegates from six other countries.

The event focussed on sport and the sea, with students investigating how the ‘blue economy’ can help inclusion, technology, marine ecology and sustainability.

At the end of the conference, the girls presented four research-based recommendations to Italian government ministers.

Faye Mok, one of the Year 12 students, said: “This was a very rewarding experience as we got to meet peers from all over the world and work together to make recommendations to the Italian minister of education and merit.”

Edith Earl, Deputy Head Academic at Roedean, who accompanied the girls on the five-day trip, added: “We are so proud of them for representing Roedean and the UK.

“The girls built the expertise and confidence to make recommendations to the Italian government on inclusion, environmental protection and technological innovation. Everyone has come away with a wealth of ideas for events and experiences at Roedean.

“The organisers were so impressed the girls have already been invited back and we look forward to getting involved in future programmes.”

Young people from Italy, France, the US, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland took part in the conference, which was held at the sporting village for the 38th America’s Cup. Afterwards, the students had free time to visit Naples and the Roman ruins at Pompeii.
