Bootham School has announced a two-year plan to develop its facilities in York city centre so that all of its students can share the same campus for the first time.
The Quaker boarding school is currently split across two locations β one on Bootham and one in Clifton. It will now invest in a self-contained junior school at the Bootham campus and renovate the schoolβs property at 61 Bootham into a study centre for its sixth form college students.
As part of the plans, the school is in advanced negotiation to agree a 99-year lease of the Bootham Park playing fields, located next to site.
Two new football pitches will be created on the fields, used by Bootham students and partner primary schools in the day, and community teams in the evenings and weekends.
Boothamβs split location currently sees students and staff regularly transported between the two sites for the use of sports pitches and specialist teaching facilities.
The new development, to be completed in late 2028, mean this will no longer be necessary, and the current junior site in Clifton will be marketed for sale and possible residential development.
Funds raised will go towards the planned upgrades to the Bootham site, and into a fund to extend the schoolβs existing bursaries for young people.
Deneal Smith, Head of Bootham, said: βBy bringing the whole school together, improving our facilities and investing in transformational bursary provision, I believe we have the opportunity to continue to strengthen Bootham for generations to come.β
