A new student-led initiative connects future leaders with UK MPs and international ministers to bring classroom learning to life, as Abbey College Cambridge has officially launched its new Political in Conversation Series.
Bridging the gap between textbook political theory and real-world governance, the program gives students the unique opportunity to directly engage with prominent domestic and international politicians through rigorous, unfiltered Q&A sessions.
The initial line-up has already seen students challenge notable political figures on pressing global issues. Recent speakers include Cambridge’s Labour MP, Daniel Zeichner, and high-profile international statesman Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s former Minister of Information and Culture (2015–2023).
During these sessions, students led critical debates on governance, youth political participation, and the impact of global media.
Speaking on his visit, Lai Mohammed commented: “It was truly an honour to engage with the students and academic community. The quality of the discussions, the curiosity of the students, and the overall intellectual atmosphere made the experience both enriching and memorable.
“Institutions like Abbey College Cambridge continue to play a vital role in shaping global conversations and nurturing critical thinking among young minds.”
Dr Elena Hesse, Principal of Abbey College Cambridge, commented on the launch: “Our goal is to give the next generation of global leaders a profound, first hand understanding of parliamentary procedures, policy-making, and geopolitical realities. This series places ‘student voice’ at the very centre of the experience.
“By researching complex topics ahead of time, our learners are able to confidently pitch sophisticated questions directly to people who have operated at the highest levels of government.”
To complement the headline speaker series, the school is rolling out a broader suite of political and economic enrichments. This includes masterclasses in political journalism alongside experienced industry professionals to examine the intersection of media and power.
Additionally, students are actively participating in the St Catharine’s Political Economy Seminars at the University of Cambridge, while weekly student-led debate clubs continue to tackle foundational global issues such as human rights, democracy, and diplomacy.”
