Milton Abbey School is delighted to announce that Mr James Ratcliffe, one of the school’s longest-serving and most respected members of staff, has been awarded a Bronze Award in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category of the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards.

The award has been announced as part of this year’s Thank A Teacher Day celebrations, recognising the extraordinary contribution that teachers and support staff make to the lives of young people across the UK.

Mr Ratcliffe is a much-valued member of the Milton Abbey community, serving as Form Tutor, Head of Design and Creative Media, and Director of Digital Learning. Throughout his 19 years at the school, he has consistently gone above and beyond to support, encourage and inspire pupils, helping them to become the very best versions of themselves.

Milton Abbey prides itself on its caring and supportive community, and Mr Ratcliffe embodies the values that make the school so special. Known for his dedication, creativity and unwavering commitment to both pupils and colleagues, he has made a lasting impact on generations of students.

To celebrate this well-deserved recognition, members of the Milton Abbey community shared personal reflections on the difference Mr Ratcliffe has made to their lives. Their tributes were captured in a special film, filmed and edited by Lower Sixth students Greg P and Ed T.

Commenting on the award, Headmaster Mr James Watson said:

“If Milton Abbey had a Hall of Fame, James Ratcliffe would be in it. In his 19 years of service he has always stood out as a first-rate educator and a true example of Miltonianism – he is highly skilled in his subjects, he is always ready to help pupils and colleagues, and his films, cartoons and graphics are extraordinary. It is terrific that the biggest education organisation in the world has recognised Mr Ratcliffe’s years of humble service to the profession of teaching. We salute him!”

The Pearson National Teaching Awards celebrate excellence in education and recognise individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to schools and colleges across the country.
