Felsted School brought science to life with an inspiring and hands-on Science Week, celebrating curiosity, creativity and collaboration across the Prep School.
The week began with a fascinating talk from electronics engineer Maz Dogan, who introduced Year 7 and Year 8 pupils to the world of advanced robotics. His work designing technology to support surgeons, particularly in paediatric care, offered pupils a powerful real-world insight into how engineering can transform lives.
Year 7 pupils also explored the intersection of science and philosophy during a cross-curricular workshop led by a specialist from the Faraday Institute for Religion and Science, University of Cambridge. Linking closely to their studies, pupils engaged with big questions about our place in the universe, alongside hands-on experiences including fossil handling and live demonstrations.
Throughout the week, pupils from Years 3 to 8 collaborated on a series of engineering challenges. From designing structures to slow melting ice and protect against climate change, to building floating rafts for flood-prone environments, pupils tackled real-world problems with creativity and determination. Other highlights included designing space rovers and constructing wind turbines, deepening understanding of renewable energy and future technologies.
Science Week at Felsted showcased the power of experiential learning, with pupils demonstrating impressive teamwork, resilience and a genuine enthusiasm for discovery.
This spirit of outreach and inspiration was also evident at the School’s recent Science Experience Day, where pupils from local primary schools were transformed into real-life detectives, tackling a carousel of hands-on activities. In Felsted’s fully-equipped Science classrooms, they explored investigation through science and problem-solving, guided by experienced and enthusiastic staff, as they worked to uncover ‘who stole the Head’s cake?’.
“Through immersive, hands-on experiences, we spark curiosity and inspire pupils to explore the diverse possibilities of STEM,” said Felsted Prep Head, Miranda Norris. “Equipping them with the confidence and creativity to go on and make a positive impact in the world.”
Felsted is committed to nurturing future scientists and engineers from an early age, with pupils regularly engaging in national competitions such as CanSat and the Mars Balloon project, as well as achieving success in sustainability-focused challenges. This is supported by specialist teaching and recognised through national accolades, including a Primary Gold Quality Mark for Science and a Silver STEM Award.
