Nothing says thank you like the gift of a sweet treat, as pupils aged seven to 13 from Felsted School discovered when they toured the local area delivering cakes and biscuits they had baked themselves to show their appreciation for our community heroes.
From classic sponges and chocolate cakes to intricately decorated pastries and biscuits, each entry to the Felsted Bake Off 2026 showcased the dedication and skill of young bakers at Felsted Prep School in north Essex. But while Mary Berry may have been an inspiration, pupils were also keen to please the palates of the many local community heroes who they would be delivering their creations to once the judging was over.

More than a hundred pupils took part in the competition and then helped to load up two school buses to take the baked goodies to key workers at Chelmsford Fire Station, Glendale Care Home, a local homeless shelter and kitchen, Farleigh Hospice, RDA – Riding and Carriage Driving For the Disabled, and Broomfield Hospital Children’s ward and ITU.
‘The recipients could not have been more delighted with their well-deserved parcels and expressed such thanks and gratitude for the kind and thoughtful gesture,’ said Felsted Prep Head, Miranda Norris. ‘It gave our pupils a chance to recognise and thank some of the people we most rely on in our community.’

Felsted School has always been mindful of its role in public service and has a long history of pupils and staff supporting charitable causes as well as their local and wider community with both financial help and practical assistance. Reverend Nigel Little, the school’s Chaplain, comments; ‘Voluntary work and fundraising takes place all year round at Felsted and the school has links with many charities, large and small. The student-led School Charity Team develops a programme of events and ideas to encourage pupils and staff to participate in fundraising initiatives and selects the good causes to benefit from the proceeds’. Older students at the school also spend time assisting at food banks and night shelters. Earlier this month, a group of Felsted students, along with a team of dedicated staff, took part in an incredible challenge; running a half marathon in support of these charities connected with the school.
