Murder and mayhem as students stage Chicago

STUDENTS gave the audience the old razzle dazzle after transporting them to the roaring ’20s for an evening of treachery, adultery and murder.

Barnard Castle School was covered in sequins and sparkle for five performances of Chicago, a seductive musical based on the book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb.

Director of drama Scott Edwards said: “I have been desperate to apply for the rights to Chicago for years but until now it has always been unattainable.

“With such a wealth of performing talent – both vocal and dance-based – it was the perfect choice for this year’s Year 10 to 13 production. The outcome was particularly impressive given that the students were also having to rehearse alongside the Glasshouse whole school concert in Gateshead.”

Principal roles included Emily Tuer as vaudevillian Velma Kelly and Martha Sweeney as murderous chorus girl Roxy Hart. Jack Haslam played lawyer Billy Flynn and Charlie Chuter was the hapless husband Amos Hart.

Ramneek Khokhar made sure inmates were good to Mama as Matron Morton supported by Bella Staley as Mary Sunshine.

The orchestra, conducted by musical director George Ford, played live in the library with the music piped through to Big School where the performances took place in front of packed houses.
