Taunton Schoolβs senior studentsΒ lit up the stageΒ at Tauntonβs professional theatreΒ The BrewhouseΒ last weekΒ withΒ fiveΒ dazzling performances of Legally Blonde: The Musical.
TheΒ exceptionalΒ performances ran from Wednesday 4thΒ to Saturday 7thΒ March and includedΒ 80 studentsΒ from Years 9 to 13Β inΒ technical, support, on stage, and musical roles.Β All five performances were sold out.
Legally Blonde: The MusicalΒ follows theΒ SchoolβsΒ hugely successfulΒ five-showΒ runΒ of The Addams Family at The BrewhouseΒ in 2024.
Head of Co-Curricular Drama at Taunton School, Janey Carden, said: βIt has been an absolute privilege to work with such an outstanding, talentedΒ groupΒ of students. Not only have they performed to an incredibly high standard,Β they haveΒ managed to doΒ itΒ whilst juggling lessons, tests, sports matches, ballet exams, illness and more.
βThe best thing of all is to see what lovely friendshipsΒ theyβveΒ made across all year groupsΒ – we really did become one big (and very pink) family!Β I could not beΒ prouderΒ of whatΒ weβveΒ achieved.β
StudentsΒ took on a huge rehearsal schedule to prepare for the performances, rehearsing twice a week since SeptemberΒ across the Schoolβs drama, music, and dance facilities, increasingΒ the number of sessions as they gotΒ closer to opening night.Β The very first dress rehearsal at The Brewhouse took place on Monday 2nd March which wasΒ alsoΒ the first time anyone had seen theΒ fullΒ set.
Legally Blonde: The Musical was a hugely ambitiousΒ feat,Β withΒ 21 songs, 12 costume changes for lead actor Izzy,Β plusΒ at least two changes for the rest of the cast, two on-stage dogs, andΒ a dynamic set that transformed 18 times.
The production was supported by aΒ professionalΒ lighting design company, aΒ sound engineer who regularly works in West End theatres on productions such as The Lion King, Aladdin, Six, and Hamilton, and a 14-piece orchestra consisting of Taunton SchoolΒ students,Β staff members, visiting music teachers, and professional musicians.
Staff members from across Taunton School came together to make theΒ musicalΒ possible, includingΒ 20 directly involved in the production in some capacity,Β withΒ additionalΒ support fromΒ teams includingΒ site services, catering,Β transport,Β marketing, and more.
Taunton SchoolΒ hasΒ a strong reputationΒ for itsΒ extensive Performing ArtsΒ departmentΒ whichΒ includesΒ fourΒ major productionsΒ andΒ overΒ 100Β musicΒ eventsΒ each year.Β Its academic provision runs in tandem with itsΒ vastΒ co-curricularΒ programmeΒ which includesΒ a range of music, drama, and danceΒ clubs.
