Upper Sixth Millfield student Freddie Beasley has received an offer to study Computer Science at Magdalen College, Oxford, widely regarded as one of the most competitive and academically demanding courses in the UK.
Freddie, from Somerset, joined Millfield Prep in Year 7 and is currently studying A levels in Computer Science, Physics, Maths and Further Maths. He is the first person ever to have created an artefact for the CyberEPQ by programming two blockchains.
Reflecting on his offer, Freddie said; “Studying at a university like Oxford has been at the back of my mind for many years and has constantly driven me to work hard. It feels incredibly rewarding to have achieved something I set my sights on so long ago, and I am excited to take on the next challenge.”
Alongside his academic studies, Freddie has fully embraced the opportunities available at Millfield, participating in a wide range of activities including rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics, tennis and debating. He has served as School Captain where he represented the student body and is also a member of the Bath 2025/26 U18 rugby team.
He received the news after one of his mock examinations, “I did not have much time to process it at first, but I immediately called my parents to share the news. They were incredibly proud. I’m still not sure it has fully sunk in.”
Looking ahead, Freddie hopes to pursue a career in the artificial intelligence sector, “I want to gain experience in how emerging technologies can shape the future. In the long term, I would like to create businesses that use AI to innovate and improve the lives of others.”
Millfield Head of Academic Culture, Beatrice Priest said; “Freddie’s offer of a place to study is a substantial achievement, with Magdalen College offering places to around 1 in 10 applicants. It is testament to the hard work and dedication to his academic studies that Freddie has consistently shown throughout his time at Millfield as an academic scholar. Freddie has not only thrived inside the classroom with the guidance of expert teachers, but he has flourished academically beyond the classroom though participating in numerous Olympiads and other external competitions as part of our expansive academic extension programme. “
As he approaches the end of his time at Millfield, Freddie plans to balance hard work with celebration; “I will be spending a significant amount of time studying and revising. That said, I also plan to make the most of my remaining time at Millfield, enjoying events like the Sixth Form Ball and the Summer Celebration with friends and family.”
He praises the staff at Millfield “My Housemaster, Mr Furber, has supported me fully since his arrival during my Lower Sixth year. I have also benefited greatly from the advice and guidance of Dr Brooke (Deputy Head Academic), the Futures team, and my teachers.”
