Kingswood School has been awarded the Silver Equalities Award by Equaliteach, recognising the school’s sustained commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Following an 18-month process of review, reflection and development, Kingswood achieved Silver status after submitting extensive evidence of inclusive policies, student voice initiatives and curriculum review. The strength of the school’s initial submission meant it was able to bypass the Bronze level and progress directly to Silver.
During the assessment period, the school reviewed policies and processes, evaluated curriculum content across all subjects, and considered the experiences of multilingual and international students. Staff undertook training in unconscious bias, anti-racism and supporting neurodivergent learners, while students contributed through assemblies, events and student-led groups.
The award reflects contributions from staff across multiple areas of the school and recognises a whole-school approach to inclusion. Emma Brown, Head of English and Kingwood’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Lead, said of the achievement: “I have so enjoyed the process of exploring and auditing that has led to this award. It has been humbling to see the amount of thought and work that is happening already in all parts of the school, and the enthusiastic appetite for further action and change. I am so proud that we are the first school in Bath to achieve an Equaliteach award and I would encourage any other interested schools to sign up.”
Year 13 student and EDI Prefect Janice Cheng, commented: “From starting a student-led pride club to support the LGBTQ+ community in Kingswood, to celebrating the variety of different cultures here at school, all of our staff and pupils have continuously striven to create a more inclusive atmosphere around campus. We are immensely proud of the dedication that has led to achieving this award and can’t wait to accomplish even more in the future, both for Kingswood and the local community.”
Kingswood will retain the Silver Equalities Award for three years, with the opportunity to work towards the Gold award. Rather than viewing the award as an endpoint, Kingswood sees it as a foundation for continued progress, reinforcing its commitment to creating a strong sense of belonging, wellbeing and respect for all members of its community.
