Christ’s Hospital Gospel Choir performs at St Paul’s Cathedral for historic Confirmation of Election service

Christ’s Hospital School’s Gospel Choir performed at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday 28 January as part of the Confirmation of Election service for Bishop Sarah Mullally DBE, who became the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to hold the office in its 1,400-year history.

The Confirmation of Election is a historic legal and ecclesiastical ceremony at which the Archbishop-Elect formally assumes office. The service brought together representatives from across the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the global Church through its music, readings and participants.

Alongside the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, who performed an anthem by Elgar, Christ’s Hospital’s Gospel Choir contributed an anthem called ‘My Help (Cometh From The Lord)’ to the service, playing a role in an event of major national and international significance. Their participation highlighted the important contribution of young people and school communities within the life of the Church.

Head and CEO of Christ’s Hospital Matthew Judd said:
‘Performing at St Paul’s Cathedral for such a significant and historic service was an extraordinary privilege for our students. The Gospel Choir represented the school with great distinction, and we are immensely proud of the musicianship, commitment and confidence they showed on such an important national stage.’

Christ’s Hospital Gospel Choir is known for its vibrant, expressive performances and has performed at high-profile services and events, such as the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2024, Lambeth Palace, Chichester Cathedral, and St Paul’s Cathedral for the school’s St Matthew’s Day service in 2024.

The invitation to sing at St Paul’s Cathedral reflects both the choir’s musical excellence and the school’s longstanding tradition of choral music.
