The Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, Suffolk, marked Remembrance Weekend with a series of memorable events celebrating tradition, service, and community spirit. From the spectacular Trafalgar Night Dinner and fireworks on Friday evening (7th November) to an unforgettable performance at the Lady Mayorโs Show and the moving Remembrance Sunday service, it was a weekend that captured the very best of RHS life.
The celebrations began on Friday with the Schoolโs annual Trafalgar Night Dinner and fireworks display, honouring Admiral Lord Nelson and the Royal Navy. Pupils, staff, and guests gathered to celebrate RHSโs strong maritime heritage, with guest speaker Captain Mark Hardwick RN delivering an inspiring address reflecting on leadership, service, and the enduring importance of remembrance. Entertainment was provided by The Motley Crew, local Shanty Singers from Essex, who performed on Friday evening, leading everyone in a rousing singalong of traditional sea shanties.
On Saturday 8th November, the Royal Hospital School Marching Band performed in the newly named Lady Mayorโs Show, the first time in its history the event has been led by a Lady Mayor. The band impressed crowds in London with their precision, energy, and professionalism, proudly representing the school among the capitalโs vibrant celebrations. A highlight of the day came when RHS drummers joined forces with those from Christโs Hospital School for an impromptu โdrum off.โ The spontaneous performance drew a large and enthusiastic audience, and a video of the moment has been widely viewed and shared on social media, showcasing the talent, teamwork, and school spirit of all involved.
The weekend concluded on Sunday (9th November) with the schoolโs annual Remembrance Service and Divisions on the parade ground overlooking the River Stour. The ceremony, attended by pupils, staff, alumni, and guests, honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who have served their country. The inspecting officer and guest speaker, Captain Mark Hardwick RN, reflected on the meaning of remembrance and the values of duty and respect that remain central to the RHS ethos.
Irfan Latif, Headmaster at RHS commented on the weekend, saying: โRemembrance Weekend is one of the most significant events in our school calendar. It brings together our community in gratitude and reflection, while also showcasing the energy, spirit, and excellence of our pupils. We are immensely proud of how they represented RHS throughout the weekend.โ
