Four sixth formers from Felsted School scaled the three highest mountains in the UK – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – to raise funds for a children’s charity in Mumbai, before volunteering there later this year.
Poppy, Tilly, Leo and Ralph, all Year 12 students at the independent boarding and day school in north Essex, took on the National Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Magic Bus, a charity founded by former Felsted student Matthew Spacie to support children in one of the poorest areas of India.
The team successfully completed the Challenge under the 24-hour time limit, taking 23 hours and 10 minutes to travel 1,600 miles (2,500km) and to walk 21 miles (34km), a total of 60,000 steps in tough conditions.
‘The £4,000 we raised through sponsorship will help Magic Bus to provide mentoring and sport-based education for children and families in India, breaking the cycle of poverty and creating brighter futures,’ said the intrepid Felsted Sixth Formers. ‘It was incredible then travelling to Mumbai at half-term to work with the charity and seeing how the funds have been used to make a positive difference.’
‘Making a difference’ is a key element of the school’s ethos and Felsted students, parents and staff raise funds each year for good causes in the UK and around the world. The school runs an outreach programme, which involves sharing facilities and expertise with the local community, and students regularly volunteer to help in night shelters and at food banks and to take part in charity projects in some of the most deprived countries to help improve people’s lives.
‘We are very aware that our school is part of the local community, the national community and the international community, and we take an active role,’ said Chris Townsend, Head of Felsted School. ‘Fundraising and also giving our time and energy to support others and make a positive difference is very much a part of being a member of the Felsted community, whether as a pupil, parent or member of staff. The effort that these four have put in is truly inspiring and the funds raised will change the lives of young people in Mumbai and beyond.’’
