Shebbear College is proud to unveil a refreshed and forward-thinking vision for its Sixth Form, designed to offer students a modern, flexible, and unique post-16 education experience.
At the heart of these developments is a new four-day week structure, which launched in September 2025 and is proving extremely popular with students. This innovative timetable condenses teaching into four focused days, with Fridays as an optional day for students to pursue paid work, work experience placements, or independent study. Those who choose to attend on Fridays will still benefit from co-curricular activities and time with tutors, but the flexibility allows students to take greater ownership of their time and prepare for life beyond school.
“This is a bold step forward,” said Charlie Jenkins, Head at Shebbear College. “We want our Sixth Formers to feel trusted, empowered, and ready for the real world. The four-day week gives them the freedom to explore interests, gain experience, and develop independence, while still receiving the same high-quality teaching and support.”
Alongside this structural change, Shebbear College is also updating its Sixth Form dress code to reflect modern professional standards. Jackets and ties are no longer required, and smart trainers are permitted, allowing students to feel comfortable whilst reflecting today’s workplace.
With 17 A-Level and BTEC subjects on offer, Students at Shebbear College Sixth Form also benefit from a wide range of opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom:
- Outstanding exam results and strong A-level progress
- Horizons programme for careers, apprenticeships and university applications
- The unique four-day week structure
- International Australian exchange programme
- Participation in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Ten Tors challenge
- Leadership roles and responsibilities within the Sixth Form
- Opportunities in Performing Arts
- Competitive and inclusive sport programmes
- The chance to join a Camps International expedition
- A vibrant calendar of social events, helping students build friendships and lasting memories
To support access and recognise excellence, Shebbear College is also pleased to announce that its Sixth Form Scholarship application process is now open for Year 11 pupils considering entry in September 2026. These scholarships, supported by the College’s owners, Inspired Learning Group (ILG), offer significant fee discounts and are available to pupils with strengths in academics, sport, and the performing and creative arts.
With small class sizes, personalised support, and a growing community of external applicants, Shebbear College is shaping a Sixth Form experience that is distinctive, dynamic, and deeply student-centred.
