A team of Year 9 pupils from Loughborough Grammar School took home the title of ‘Best Designed Car’ for their entry of ‘Herons Motorsport ’ at this year’s national Scalextric4Schools finals, held at the Triumph Motorcycles Visitor Experience in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
From the initial sketches back in the Autumn term to the completion of their final prototypes, the team utilised Computer Aided Design (CAD) to create and refine their vehicle. They developed digital models, 3D printed their outcomes, and ran rigorous track tests using the School’s in-house facilities to fine-tune performance in the lead-up to the event.
The Scalextric4Schools initiative is open to all UK secondary schools, colleges, and educational organisations. Designed to inspire young people to consider careers in STEM, the competition promotes hands-on learning in CAD design, engineering modification, and collaborative working – all vital skills for future roles in manufacturing and technology.
Loughborough Grammar School’s Head of Design and Technology, Mr Todd Mosely, praised the pupils’ dedication and development over the course of the challenge: “This has been our first year entering the Scalextric4Schools challenge and it has been an incredible experience throughout. The boys have simply loved designing their own cars.
“To be awarded ‘Best Designed Car’ was a superb achievement and was a great reward for the pupils’ hard work. They have really impressed me in this respect, as they have shown great dedication and commitment to the project, which has seen their skills develop immensely as a result.”
The winning design incorporated visual elements inspired by the School’s heritage logo and was engineered with speed and performance in mind. The award was presented by journalist and TV presenter Grace Webb, and the team was later interviewed by ITV News Central for a segment aired during the evening news.
Since returning to school, the boys have spent every lunchtime in the Design and Technology Department testing out the Scalextric sets they won, already gearing up for next year’s competition.
