TWO school athletes are proving to be on the ball as they move a step closer to their sporting dreams.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School pupils Jessie Burgess and Sasha Johnson have been spotted by county coaches and are now training with the South Durham and Cleveland U11s performance squad.

Both ten-year-olds dream of being part of the England team, which is currently second in the world rankings. They also hope netball will be included in future Games so they can compete at the Olympics.

Jessie, of Barnard Castle, has been playing netball as a centre since Year 3. “I like sport and love playing netball,” she said. “I enjoy all the running around and I am very competitive.”

Sasha, of Darlington, who plays centre and goal attack, added: “It is a noticeably higher standard at county but I really enjoy team sports so it’s great.”

Prep School head of sport Martin Burgess said: “This is a real achievement for both girls and training with county will really improve their skills. They can also feed back what they learn to the other girls on the school team which will be very useful.”
