Strathallan Prep School pupil Amelia Shahbaz has been crowned the Perthshire Schools Young Photographer of the Year, awarded by the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull.

The talented 12-year-old from Perth not only won the Junior Photographer of the Year award but also outshone all other junior and senior entries, securing the prestigious title of overall Young Photographer of the Year 2024 with her entry ‘Palette of the Soul’.

Amelia, who joined Strathallan in September, expressed her delight and shock at winning. She said, “I am thrilled to be named Young Photographer of the Year. Receiving a new camera as the top prize has made me so excited to further explore and develop my photography skills.”

Francis Glancy, Head of Art at Strathallan, said, “Amelia should be incredibly proud. The Young Perthshire Photographer of the Year is a prestigious award and I know from the submissions I’ve seen she was up against some brilliant young artists. It’s fantastic to see Strathallan pupils continue to showcase their skills and get recognised for their talent.”

Strathallan’s award-winning Art department teaches a broad range of artistic skills out of the school’s purpose-built Art building. Opened by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, the department houses specially designed studios including a ceramic studio with kilns, a printmaking studio and a dark room, as well as an outdoor patio and our popular Art Café.

From traditional drawing and painting in every medium, to graphic design, textiles, film photography and animation, our students have the chance to explore a diverse range of artistic skills. Sixth Form students have their own double studio with art college-style booth where they can pin up work and other inspirational material to truly make their space their own.

Strathallan students regularly participate in high-profile exhibitions and competitions, showcasing their exceptional talents on both local and national stages and the school has an excellent record of students being recognised at the highest level. Most recently, Strathallan student Chloe T was named Senior Young Artist of the Year for her winning entry ‘Warrior’ by the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull.
