Roedean Students Take to the Stage

Posted: 9th February 2024

NOTHING says early noughties female empowerment like the classic musical Legally Blonde and the pupils of Roedean embraced this, their first production of 2024, with gusto.

With Spice Girls tracks getting the audience in the mood even before the curtain rose, the stage was set for a riotous couple of hours of fabulous singing, smart jokes, great costumes and choreography and the message that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.

This show is a great opportunity for as many girls as possible to get involved thanks to its numerous parts and the cast clearly had enormous fun delivering the witty, catchy songs that structure this fiesta in pink.

Galina Baxter and Amelia Morrison took on the main role on alternate shows and both excelled as the relentlessly optimistic, secretly very smart Elle Woods – no small feat as the character is rarely off the stage and has so many solos to deliver. Despite great comic timing, they also managed to convey a wonderful journey of self-discovery and empowerment and had the audiences spellbound.

Kate Chong and Gracie Gobat had a lot of fun with the role of Paulette the hairdresser (“Elle, did you know the number one reason behind all bad hair decisions is love”) and Olivia Parker-O’Connelll and Alfie Arnold smashed it as Elle’s love interest Emmett.

Director Sue Woodbridge said: “This has definitely been one of the most enjoyable productions to direct  at Roedean as it has so many roles to offer the students, the music is exciting, the dancing exhilarating and every performer has mirrored the energy of the main character as she is a symbol of relentless optimism. I have been impressed with how supportive the students have been, helping each other to learn intricate choreography and harmonies while forging  new friendships from year 9 to year 13.”
