Shebbear College Equestrians Off To National Championships And Badminton Grassroots!

Posted: 6th December 2023

The Equestrian teams at Shebbear College in Devon are going from strength-to-strength with two teams and three individuals qualifying for the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) National Championships at Hickstead next May!

The teams, sporting their new red, gold and black Shebbear College branded kit, competed at the NSEA Eventing at Pontispool last month with the 80cm team of Anaya Stoneman, Tichy Sanders and Neve Webber securing the all-important triple clear round to win the section (even though at times, the horses had other ideas!) and qualify for the national finals in the spring.

Meanwhile at the NSEA Bicton Eventing a few weeks later, the 70cm team of Annabelle Greenslade, Anaya Stoneman, Kaia McCartney and Neve Webber echoed the success of the 80cm team, winning their class and also getting through to the championships!

Team Leader and Shebbear College teacher, Marie Webber said “I am very proud of each of our equestrian students for competing in the NSEA events this winter, showing commitment and determination to keep their horses fit during the winter months. We are over the moon to have qualified teams and individuals for the Hickstead championship, but I am just as proud of every student for always giving it their all.”

She continued “Our students have been flexible with the heights they have jumped, enabling us to field a selection of teams at the competitions. In typical equestrian fashion, we have had thrills and spills with riders stepping up and competing over bigger fences as well as those taking on the challenges for the first time.  We are really looking forward to competing the spring competitions!”

In other equestrian news, 13 year old Tichy Sanders and Camilla Albery’s Sparhanger Velvet made the national press when they won the BE90 three-day event at Bicton Arena in October and secured a place at the 2024 Voltaire Design Grassroots Championships at Badminton! When speaking to Horse and Hound magazine about her achievement, Tichy said. “It’s quite surreal really! If anyone had said I’d qualify for Badminton, I would definitely not have believed them.”
