Year 12 Leys pupil Freya H has been selected as part of the Saracens Mavericks U17 netball squad for the 2023-24 season. Their first match is against Team Bath on 9 December.
The Saracens Mavericks are one of the best netball clubs in the country, competing in the UK’s elite competition – The Netball Superleague. Operating in the East Region they deliver grassroots programmes for all ages and abilities.
Last season Freya was part of the U18 Futures programme, which is designed to prepare players for the Academies. The U17 Academy is the next step along their Performance Pathway as players progress through U19, U21 and U23 Academies towards the full adult squad.
In addition to this, Year 10 pupil Isy F, and Year 9 pupils Nancy F and Effie N have also been selected for the Mavericks Pathway sides in their regions, and we look forward to seeing how they progress in the future.
Freya commented: “I feel extremely privileged to have been offered one of the 18 spaces in the U17 Academy squad. It will be such a great opportunity to develop my netball skills alongside, and against, players of a really high calibre.
“In due course I hope to progress to the U19 Academy, but I am also planning to study Sports Science at Loughborough after my time at The Leys, so I may also have the opportunity to play for one of the university teams.”
Carla Rudd, Director of Sport at The Leys, added: “We are thrilled that Freya has been selected in the Saracens Mavericks U17 netball squad. Her consistent hard work and high-level performance over the years have rightfully earned her this spot. We are looking forward to following her journey and witnessing her continued success in the squad!”
