Students of ACS International School Hillingdon’s Digital Arts and Expressive Arts courses attended a four-day visual effects workshop run by Creative Media Skills Institute – the industry training provider based at the world leading film studio, Pinewood Studios in Slough.

Students in Grade 11 and 12 (16-18 years) participated in a digital mapping and modelling workshop as part of the school’s first-of-its-kind International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Career-related Programme (CP) in Digital Arts and Expressive Arts, which helps students develop skills such as visual effects, animation, 3D modelling, game design, visual effects, and computer programming. As an alternative to the proposed Advanced British Standard, the CP course gives students valuable insight into careers within the film and gaming industries while linking directly to their academic studies.

Fleeta Chew Siegel, Visual effects, Animation and Game Design teacher at ACS Hillingdon, said: “During the interactive workshop, our students gained a wider understanding of the latest technologies used in the film and gaming industries and how they are integrated. The workshop also contributes towards our students’ ongoing work portfolio, which is essential in documenting their progress and accelerating their learning. With this work, students can showcase the skills they have learnt to universities and workplaces around the globe.”

During the workshop, students learned how visual effects are applied to objects that appear on screen. ACS Hillingdon student Ebba D., said: “People who love hands on work and being creative will enjoy the CP in Digital Arts and Expressive Arts. We’re able to learn from industry experts and gain a different perspective about the potential jobs and whether the career path is really for us. There are also a lot of different study options within the course, depending on what you want to focus on.”

The CP’s sister course, the Diploma Programme (DP), is a highly regarded, academically rigorous qualification. CP students are required to take a minimum of two DP courses, which are each approximately equivalent to an A Level, and therefore gain real-life experience in their field of interest, while building a solid academic foundation which will enable them to secure places at top universities in the UK and around the globe.

ACS Hillingdon offers a high-quality international curriculum to its students aged 4-18. In place of A Levels, students can study the IB’s Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP), Advanced Placement (AP) courses or the US High School Diploma.
