Millfield athletes to represent their countries at 2023 European Championships

Millfield pentathletes have qualified to represent Great Britain in Biathle, Triathle and Laser Run at the European Championships.

The Championships are to be held in Erding, Germany from the 28 June – 2 July.

Lower Sixth student Gerard McGrady and Year 10 Tom Webb secured their qualification at the Biathle European Qualifier, which took place at Sandford Parks Lido, Cheltenham, on Sunday 16 April.

Gerard will also be competing in the Triathle competition, where he will be joined by Year 11 student Zac Cooper. Gerard will be one of only three boys to be representing Great Britain U19 in both the Biathle and Triathle events, despite being only 16 years old.

Millfield Prep School also took a large pupil contingent to the qualifiers in Cheltenham, and enjoyed significant success on the day. The qualifiers for the Biathle European Championships were: Year 8 Ruby Bodman, Year 7 Lois Murray, Eva Dowden, Year 6 Polly Warman, Elsie Seager, Kruze Frampton and Year 5 Raffie Bodman.

Prep School pupils also qualified for the European Triathle Championships after competing in the European Qualifying event in Leweston, Dorset. Year 8 Ruby Bodman, Iona Murray, Year 7 Eva Dowden, Year 6 Kruze Frampton, Lois Murray, Year 5 Raffie Bodman and Year 4 Cooper Lawson all achieved finishes that qualify them to represent Great Britain in Erding. Year 8 Ruby Bodman, Year 7 Lois Murray, Eva Dowden, Year 5 Raffie Bodman and Year 3 Ethan Jory will all compete for Great Britain in the European Laser Run Championships at the same venue. Year 8 Hope Lewis will represent Ireland at the same event.

Millfield’s Head of Modern Pentathlon Antonia Cord said, “I am so proud of all the athletes that have qualified for the competitions; they have all worked so hard and the hard work has been rewarded. I wish them all the very best of luck and they deserve every success.”

Millfield Modern Pentathlon regularly enters athletes for regional and national competitions in biathle, biathlon, triathlon, tetrathlon and pentathlon. The club has close links with Regional Talent and Athlete Development Programmes, into which Millfield students are regularly selected. Old Millfieldians include former Olympian and Pentathlon GB Team Leader Dominic Mahoney and Irish Olympian and European Champion Arthur Lanigan O’Keeffe.
