Marlborough Difference Launch Day

Posted: 4th May 2023

On Wednesday 19th April, the Marlborough Difference Campaign for life changing bursaries officially launched at the College with a special Launch Day that raised a remarkable £1.3m from over 1,000 donors. The amount is record breaking for such an event, not just for Marlborough but for any independent school in the UK.

Launch Day was a 36-hour celebration and fundraising challenge for the whole Marlborough community, including Old Marlburians and parents who gave generously online.

Pupils, led by the Charity Committee and House teams, ran a jam-packed afternoon of activities in Court which were shared on social media. The huge variety of stalls and challenges included a human fruit machine, an inflatable goal, chess and a coconut shy. Many Houses had stalls selling food, such as doughnuts, pick and mix, ice lollies and cakes. There was face painting run by the Charity Think Tank, an inflatable assault course, the Great College Bake-Off competition and brave beaks taking a soaking in the stocks. Kudos goes to Julia Hodgson and Jonathan Swift who ‘won’ the beak pie-smash and duly accepted their prize!

The ever popular House Tug-of-War was the centrepiece of the afternoon and congratulations go to Morris who were victorious in both the Junior and Upper girls and to B1 and C1 who won the Junior and Upper boys’ events respectively.

The Music Department provided entertainment across the afternoon with a range of top-notch performances from pupils across the Year Groups and Houses including bands, solo performances and our very own Big Band.

As a finale, the Shell took on the Colourful Run around Hamersley with Morris and Cotton winning the prizes for fastest House and B1 for the most colourful House.

The day concluded with an Asian Food Festival in Norwood Hall, generously provided by Piers Buck (CO 1987-91) and a very special violin recital performed by Poppy M was live-streamed from the Memorial Hall from 7pm.

All donations made across the Launch Day period were doubled by a very generous donor. Furthermore, during the final two hours, donations were tripled by another very generous Marlburian family.

It was an amazing day with a fantastic atmosphere in Court and we are incredibly grateful to every member of our community, on campus and a far, who took part and contributed to raising such a fantastic sum of money to help increase the number of free places at Marlborough.
