Women and girls in science celebrated at Ashville

Posted: 10th February 2023

Pupils and staff from Ashville College in Harrogate are celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science. (Saturday, February 11)

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, International Day of Women and Girls in Science aims to promote the full and equal access and participation of females in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

In recent months, three Sixth Formers have recently set up an after-school Girls in Science club to share knowledge and ideas with pupils in Years 7 and 8, meanwhile Year 3 pupil Jessica Essen has been recognised for flying the flag for girls in science after independently completing 20 home science experiments.

Ashville College Head Rhiannon Wilkinson said: “STEM subjects have always been popular with College pupils, and we are keen to encourage more girls to study Science beyond their GCSEs.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see girls taking the lead in this area, undertaking home experiments, and setting up an after-school club where senior girl pupils are helping to inspire their younger counterparts to flourish in this field.”
