Huish Music Takes the Show on the Road

Music students at Richard Huish College have just completed a series of dates performing at secondary schools across Somerset. The event, in which the talents of the College’s music students were showcased, aimed to raise awareness of music in secondary schools and inspire young musicians.

Returning for its fourth year, the venture entitled ‘Huish Music Gig on a Lorry’ was once again sponsored by Falcon Vehicle Hire, who donated the lorry for the students to perform on, giving the performers the perfect outdoor stage to demonstrate their talents.

Over a week, students travelled and performed at a selection of schools including Courtfields School in Wellington, Chilton Trinity in Bridgwater, Kingsmead School in Wiveliscombe, and Heathfield Community School in Taunton. Pupils from these schools were also given the opportunity to participate in the event, with many of them stepping up to the challenge and performing to their fellow students.

The tour demonstrated the variety of different music courses and enrichment Huish has to offer. Music Production, Popular Music, and Music students all performed, and Music Production students also worked behind the scenes helping with the production of the event.

Huish Pop Music and Music Production Course Manager, Andy Wild said; “It was so good for the students to be able to get out and perform in front of such receptive crowds and thrive! The schools were amazing, especially some of the student bands that we are hopefully going to get to record in our studios next year”!

Alongside the success of ‘Gig on a Lorry’, in June Huish students also performed at It’s in the Bag’s ‘Test Fest’ at Taunton Rugby Club and gained work experience assisting with technical requirements of the John Peel Stage at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival for the 17^th year.
