Three Millfield students have received offers to study medicine at top universities across the UK.
Following a highly competitive application process, including entrance exams and interviews, Upper Sixth students Ella Gambold, Rozalia Moore and Harriet Woodland-Broome have all received offers to study medicine from September.
Ella, who joined Millfield Prep School in Year 8, studies maths, further maths, biology and chemistry at A level, and has received an offer to study medicine from the University of Cardiff. Ella decided to join Millfield for its broad and varied academic provision, alongside its unrivalled music department and facilities. Ella said: “I’m very excited to have received an offer from the University of Cardiff. The university has a unique way of teaching which is more through case work rather than lectures, and that really appealed to me. Sixth Form at Millfield does a lot for you career-wise. Staff members such as Miss Landrigan were keen to help me secure work experience even during the pandemic, and teachers are always making themselves available for questions and enjoy helping you progress, which you don’t always see in lots of schools. Moreover, Miss Weal was a huge help, organising mock interviews, taking time to speak to me individually throughout the application process and organising a day where we could speak to medicine applicants from other schools.”
Rozalia, a day student from Somerset, joined Millfield Prep School in Year 7. She studies maths, biology, chemistry and art at A level, and has received offers from the University of Cardiff and the University of Exeter. Rozalia joined Millfield for the diversity of opportunities on offer, and the ability to cater her time at Millfield to her specific interests. She said: “I chose Cardiff and Exeter because I absolutely love the look of the courses and I think they will really suit me as a person. I wanted to study medicine as I see it as a rewarding and varied career that could take me in any direction within the field, and, however cliched it is, provides me with the opportunity to change someone’s life whether that be a life changing surgery or making someone comfortable in their last few hours. Miss Weal has supported me with the application process since the start of Lower Sixth and there is no way I would have managed to write the personal statement I did or navigate the notorious interview process without her!”
Harriet, who joined Millfield in Lower Sixth, studies biology, chemistry and geography at A level, and has received offers from the University of East Anglia and the University of Southampton. Harriet joined Millfield for the variety of opportunities on offer, and the school’s unique ability to support high performance in both sport and academics simultaneously. Harriet said: “I’m thrilled to receive offers from these two universities. Alongside the research opportunities they provide, getting early patient contact in the course was important to me, and both universities prioritise this from the first week. It’s been great to have so much support from my teachers while applying for these courses. Miss Weal leads our weekly medicine meetings, and she was a massive help with understanding the application process. I’m grateful to my biology teachers Mrs Haydon and Ms McEwen for inspiring me to pursue the subject, and for helping me gain work experience and perfect my personal statement.”
Throughout Sixth Form at Millfield, students are provided with a full programme of university talks and UCAS advice. The school offers work experience contacts through the Old Millfieldian Society, but students are also encouraged to find their own placements by writing a CV and covering letter, and by focussing on improving networking and employability skills. Alongside support for US university and Oxbridge applicants, Millfield has a dedicated Medics Programme that supports potential doctors throughout the competitive application process to medical schools.
