We are delighted that Milton Abbey School joined BSA On Board in April 2025. You can see the work they do within the community below.
Over £9,000 Fundraised for Charity!
We hosted an exhilarating day of challenges to raise funds for the school’s 75th Fund and two pupil-chosen charities: Tiny Miracles and Project Planet Earth. We are over the moon to announce that we have raised a fantastic £8,900 with more donations still coming through!
The Oceans Seven Swim Challenge was inspired by the world’s most treacherous sea channels, akin to mountaineering’s ‘seven summits.’ Our students and staff replicated these swims in the school pool, covering distances from 15km to 41km. Teams of two to six swam between 4km and 21km each, showcasing their endurance and teamwork. Special mention must go to Leila P, Lower Sixth, who swam 600 lengths, Mrs Burg who completed 15km and Mr Hanney who completed 20km! We are incredibly proud of all the students who took giant steps out of their comfort zones to complete this ambitious challenge. In total the 27 team members swam over 9,840 lengths (246km) from 8:00am in the morning until 9:00pm! The Milton Abbey Peaks Challenge offered a gruelling 7km or 12km run around the school’s incredible landscape.
The determination and resilience of our pupils throughout the day were truly inspiring. They pushed through fatigue and discomfort, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and a strong sense of camaraderie. Their efforts were a testament to their character and commitment to supporting worthy causes. We were delighted to welcome back some former students who thoroughly enjoyed their ‘run down memory lane’ amidst the spectacular scenery they sometimes took for granted during their time at Milton Abbey. Their presence added a special touch to the event, and it was wonderful to see them reconnect with the school community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the students, parents, former students, staff and friends of the school for their generosity in supporting the school’s 75th Fund and the chosen charities.
Environmental Committee:
The Environmental Committee was originally founded by students as part of their co-curricular programme and has since grown into a popular Wednesday afternoon activity, attracting students from all year groups. Jimmy L, Middle Sixth, joined the committee driven by his passion for ensuring that every boarding house has its own garden. He envisions these gardens not only growing beautiful flowers but also vegetables, with friendly competitions among houses to see who can grow the most impressive crops. As Head of Athelstan House, Jimmy believes this initiative will provide a fantastic weekend opportunity for his housemates to engage in gardening, learn valuable skills, and strengthen their sense of community. When the project first began, some of the houses within the Mansion House didn’t have their own garden spaces, but today, Hambro, Athelstan, and Hughie’s houses each have their own thriving gardens, with vibrant flowers in full bloom!
Tulip Planting:
The Environmental Committee has been hard at work planting tulips alongside Mr Burnham-Slipper, Head of Land Based Studies. We’re excited to be planting 600 stunning black and gold tulips (our famous brand colours) – we can’t wait to see them in bloom.
National Tree Week:
As part of National Tree Week, Lower Sixth Countryside Management students engaged in a hands-on practical assessment, focusing on tree planting.
This activity not only provides valuable learning opportunities but also contributes to enhancing the biodiversity of the school’s woodlands. With much of the area affected by ash dieback, the students are determined to restore and revitalize sections of the woodland. Their efforts aim to create a thriving environment that can be sustainably managed and serve as a rich resource for their studies in the years ahead.
Hospitality Assessment | Inviting Local Community for Afternoon Tea
A huge congratulations to our talented Lower Sixth Hospitality students for acing their afternoon tea assessment! Everyone played a vital role, whether it was preparing the food, setting up the event, or serving our lovely guests. Thank you to all our invited guests who gave up their time to come to Milton Abbey for afternoon tea and gave feedback to our students to help with the evaluation of their assessment.
Milton Abbey School often invites the local Milton Abbas community onsite for events such as the Christmas Service, and the Headmaster often invites the friends of Milton Abbey School for drinks and afternoon tea to keep the bond strong.
A special thank you also goes to our local suppliers who helped with the sources of ingredients, such as Oxfords Bakery for the bread, Steeptonbill Farm Shop for the fresh eggs, cucumbers, lemons, and courgettes, and a special mention to Mrs Driver for the delightful chutney!
Boarding Houses Fundraise for Charities
Hughie’s House hosted a successful Vinted clothes sale before the end of the Lent Term, raising an impressive £649 in just a few hours for their chosen charity, Shelter. Meanwhile, students in Damer worked hard to support Dementia UK by selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts during break. Not to be outdone, Housemaster Mr Treadaway is taking his commitment even further by running the London Marathon to raise even more funds!
