WINDSOR, UK (31 October 2023) It was a delight rather than a fright for members of the King George VI Day Centre in Windsor today, when two students from St George’s School Windsor Castle joined the lunch and social club’s annual Halloween party to present a cheque for over £1,200 generated through school fundraising.
Raised by Year 8 students through their endeavours with the school’s ‘Tenner Challenge’, as well as raffle ticket sales at the St George’s School Windsor Castle stall at Eton Action Fair in September, the money will help the centre to continue to provide much needed companionship for senior members of the town. A cause close to the children’s hearts following a visit to the social club in May this year.
“Earlier this year my class spent the day at the King George VI Day Centre and we were so interested by all the stories the members had,” explained Sukhmani, a Year 8 student at St George’s School Windsor Castle. “We loved spending time with them. We played lots of games, served some food, did some art and we had a chat. It was so heart-warming how they welcomed us all in. We would love to go there again.”
The school’s annual Tenner Challenge sees teams of Senior Prep students work together to bring a product to market with the aim of testing their entrepreneurial, sales and marketing skills to see who can raise the most money from the same initial financial investment. The business ventures this year ranged from washing teachers’ cars to selling fresh lemonade, handmade jewellery and even raffling off a giant soft toy. At Eton Action Fair in September, students sold raffle tickets to win one of five Lego castles.
Lucy Playle, Manager of the King George VI Day Centre, said: “We rely on fundraising and donations and we put the money straight back into our members, organising day trips and entertainment for our sessions. Our members absolutely love having children here and get so much out of interacting with young people. We would welcome St George’s back at any time and we really appreciate their continuing support.”
In addition to the Senior Prep students’ philanthropic efforts, the school delivered over 30 bags of food to Windsor Foodshare and the Salvation Army this half term, following a collection as part of the school’s annual harvest festival. In addition to the donation drive, the school celebrated the season with two Harvest Assemblies, featuring children from Reception to Year 2 singing songs including ‘Big, Red, Combine Harvester’ in front of their parents and friends.
